Getting to Know You

Having arrived in Cairo on Sunday evening, we had four days
sightseeing and relaxing in our hotel, getting to know the other
riders. In normal life, getting to know a stranger involves saying
hello, asking lots of questions and listening to the answers. Then, in
the modern world, adding them on Facebook. It has frequently been the
other way round in this scenario, which has been odd.

All the riders wrote a profile for the Tour D’Afrique website, and some posted their
blog links, most of which we visited at some point before we left. So
when people were giving us their brief, personal synopsis we were
faced with the quandary of saying “Yeah, I know, I have stalked you
for the past few months”, or feigning ignorance and saying “Oh,
really? That’s interesting”. It’s an odd world where you get to know
people virtually and then meet them in the flesh. We are yet to admit
to the stalking!

We’ve now met about 50 people (in real life), are slowly beginning to remember their names, and are really looking forward to riding with them, as not much is better than cycling for
getting to know people well, due to the hours of repetitive and inane thoughts as you roll along the roads.

  1. And now you have admitted to the stalking, any of them who are stalking you back will now have read this, thus creating another layer of 'we all know we are stalking each other but none of us is speaking about it'. A truely modern conundrum!
